Storyline:

In a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences.

Plot Summary:

Sometime in the future, the city of Metropolis is home to a Utopian society where its wealthy residents live a carefree life. One of those is Freder Fredersen. One day, he spots a beautiful woman with a group of children, she and the children who quickly disappear. Trying to follow her, he, oblivious to such, is horrified to find an underground world of workers, apparently who run the machinery which keeps the above ground Utopian world functioning. One of the few people above ground who knows about the world below is Freder's father, Joh Fredersen, who is the founder and master of Metropolis. Freder learns that the woman is Maria, who espouses the need to join the "hands" - the workers - to the "head" - those in power above - by a mediator or the "heart". Freder wants to help the plight of the workers in the want for a better life. But when Joh learns of what Maria is espousing and that Freder is joining their cause, Joh, with the assistance of an old colleague and now nemesis named Rotwang, an inventor, works toward quashing a supposed uprising, with Maria as the center of their plan. However, Joh is unaware that Rotwang has his own agenda. But if any of these plans includes the shut down of the machines, total anarchy could break loose both above ground and below.

It is the future, and humans are divided into two groups: the thinkers, who make plans (but don't know how anything works), and the workers, who achieve goals (but don't have the vision). Completely separate, neither group is complete, but together they make a whole. One man from the "thinkers" dares visit the underground where the workers toil, and is astonished by what he sees...

The future. Metropolis is a wonderful city, high above the ground its towers stand. The people prosper, the economy is flourishing, the suspended streets are busy. But Metropolis also has a great secret, so hidden that not even Freder Fredersen, son of founder Joh Fredersen knows about it. He is spending his free time in the Eternal Gardens, when suddenly a woman shows up, with what looks like a class of children. They're from the City of Workers, in the depth, Freder learns. "These are your brothers", she tells the children, before she is forced to leave. Freder is so intrigued he follows them into the depth and doesn't like what he sees. The workers are exploited, they must do labor like robots. Freder tries to convince his father to change, while the woman tries to keep workers' morale high by predicting a man will stand up that will mediate. Someone that will use both hands and head, someone that will be the heart.

synopsis:

It is an alternate future in the year 2026 from a 1926 point of view. The city of Berlin, Germany, now called Metropolis, has become a sprawling modern megalopolis, much like the present 21st century of Dubai, with an art deco flavor to it. The city is sharply divided between the privileged wealthy and working classes, who spend their days endlessly toiling at boilers and machinery to keep the city running. They live underground with artificial lighting in nondescript high rise apartments reminiscent of the Soviet Union during the communist era.

There is a track and field decathlon competition at a stadium similar to ancient Greece with Freder, the son of the master of Metropolis, John Fredersen, participating in it, detailing the nice life the privileged live in. Later on, Freder is in a pleasure garden with a beautiful woman, peacock, and fountain. While he is enjoying a moment with the woman, an attractive young peasant girl named Maria comes out of the door with a group of children showing them how the other half lives and insisting they are their brothers and sisters. Freder is intrigued by this.

Freder goes into a place full of machinery and finds a bunch of workers mechanically toiling away. He can't believe what he is seeing and that men are subjected to such inhumane conditions. One of the machines reaches a temperature above boiling point and kills a worker. Freder witnesses this and imagines it to be the ancient sacrificial temple Moloch, probably due to a Catholic upbringing. After witnessing this, Freder very conveniently walks outside to a taxi driver in a 1924 Opel waiting for him.

After Freder enters the taxi, the audience is given a visual treat of the city of Metropolis, with Freder and the taxi passing through two lights for access on a bridge, then a huge megalopolis of bridges, cars, skyscrapers, biplanes, and a very large skyscraper as a symbol of the Tower of Babel.

John Fredersen, the Master of Metropolis, is a cold, businesslike man with a staff of accountants and working in a huge office with automated curtains, a desk full of push buttons, a picture telephone, and a screen of stocks, much like Wall Streets Dow Jones.
